Product Description
Weiten's PSYCHOLOGY: THEMES AND VARIATIONS, Ninth Edition, maintains this book's strengths while addressing market changes with new learning objectives, a complete updating, and a fresh new design. The text continues to provide a unique survey of psychology that meets three goals: to demonstrate the unity and diversity of psychology's subject matter, to illuminate the research process and its link to application, and to make the material challenging and thought-provoking yet easy to learn. Weiten accomplishes the successful balance of scientific rigor and a student-friendly approach through the integration of seven unifying themes, an unparalleled didactic art program, real-life examples, and a streamlined set of learning aids that help students see beyond research to big-picture concepts. Major topics typically covered in today's courses are included, such as evolutionary psychology, neuropsychology, biological psychology, positive psychology, applied psychology, careers, and multiculturalism and diversity.
- Key Learning Goals, approximately 30 per chapter, serve as advance organizers that focus students' attention on important ideas and topics to be covered. The consecutively numbered goals are paired with a Review of Key Points at the end of each section to reinforce key takeaway messages.
- Research includes many topics that have relevance in students' everyday lives, from the Internet's pervasiveness in our society to coverage of the OxyContin epidemic, data on the association between exposure to media violence and aggression, findings on intelligence and IQ tests, and research on the relationship between social support and reduced mortality.
- Illustrated overviews combine tabular information, photos, and diagrams to provide a coherent synopsis of key ideas in the areas of research methods, sensation and perception, history, learning, development, personality theory, psychopathology, and psychotherapy.
- The book includes hundreds of visuals, including more than 40 vivid illustrations of the brain, neurons, and other aspects of physiology by award-winning medical illustrator Fred Harwin. The popular Concept Chart booklet helps students visualize the macro-level and drill down to the micro-level.
- The book balances a critical thinking emphasis with the applied, practical side of psychology. Critical Thinking Application boxes ask students to apply critical thinking skills to chapter-related topics, adding a more formal critical thinking element to the text. Complementing this feature are Personal Application boxes that offer practical information for use in students' day-to-day lives.

Product Description
This book will be of interest to legal, political and other social theorists/philosophers. Unique in its topics as well as in its approach, the book takes substantial steps towards answering essential questions about political influence. It analyses the concepts of social, political and legal power with a view towards arriving at an adequate and theoretically relevant distinction between power and influence. This volume contains an extensive overview and critical assessment; explores the conceptual relationship between freedom and power; assesses the distinctions made in existing scholarship between power and influence; presents the author's own proposal for a definition of influence as opposed to power; combines insights from political theory, legal philosophy and the general theory of norms; is densely argued, yet accessible to all interested readers without any prerequisite of special prior knowledge; is transparently structured, written in a clear style, avoiding social-scientific jargon and using ordinary language. "Exact but not exacting, this is a fine work of overview and analysis; it makes an excellent contribution to the literature on power and freedom." Philip Pettit, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Politics, Princeton University "In this work, the author assumes the task of a 'logical clean-up' ' an extremely valuable contribution to the promotion of scientific rigour and clarity in political scholarship." [This book] "gives the reader orientation in a conceptual jungle." [It is] "an excellent analysis of the relationships between normative and social power." Ernesto Garzon Valdes, Prof. em. of Legal Philosophy, President of The Tampere Club "A genuinely pioneering contribution insofar as the author ' to my knowledge: for the first time ever ' succeeds in giving a conceptually rather clear profile to a descriptive-analytic and normative understanding of the phenomenon of influence and in elucidating ' again, by way of thorough and profound analysis ' that this is much more than an academic glass-bead game, because our understanding of such essential normative foundations of political theory as freedom and equality is inextricably linked to the concepts of power and influence, and because this is the only way how we can come to see the fundamental obstacles to a coherent interpretation and institutional realization of the idea of the democratic Rechtsstaat." Rainer Schmalz-Bruns, Prof. of Political Theory, Darmstadt University of Technology

This review is from: Psychology: Themes and Variations, Briefer Edition, 8th Edition (Kindle Edition) I bought the Kindle version, as I decided that it'd be one less textbook for me to carry around. Unfortunately, there are still several problems:- the graphics / charts are difficult/impossible to read - the 'limits' of the Kindle format, make the flow of the book unnatural. (meaning charts aren't where they should be, as per the paper format) - there are lots of typos and "missing choices" in the Practice tests section 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?) This review is from: Psychology: Themes and Variations, Briefer Version (Paperback) My psych professor wanted the new edition but i refused to buy a $133 book that i wasn't going to use to its full extent, so i bought this. The chapters are off and slightly different from the newer one but besides that it gets the job done quite well. The condition was nice as well, some wearing but it doesn't bother me at all. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
